Media Relations and Issues Manager

Our client, a regional governmental organization, is seeking an experienced Media Relations and Issues Manager to lead a dynamic team to drive proactive and reactive communications. About the role:
  • Leads development of strategic planning for media relations and issue management, for proactive and responsive communications with external media and stakeholders
  • Works closely with cross-functional team leads to ensure consistency of key messaging and communication strategies within the organization
  • Collaborates with team members to strategize and execute plans to address reputation management, crisis communications, and ongoing issues management concerns
  • Develops strong relationships with external media, responding to information requests, sharing key messages, monitoring news and social media feeds for conflicting messages
  • Researches and produces communications documents for internal use and external distribution, including media releases, public service announcements, public relations materials, executive/government briefings
  • Manages strategy and communications for issues management, consulting with internal stakeholders on arising issues, planning related media relations activities
  • Provides full range of issues management support for the organization, including research and environmental scans, data analysis and evaluations, project management and events
About you:
  • 5+ years’ experience in corporate communications, including issues management and media relations accountability
  • Degree or Diploma in Communications, Public Affairs, Public Relations or related discipline
  • Strong leadership skills, works confidently with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Comfortable building relationships with external stakeholders including mainstream and alternative media, advocacy groups
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing and public speaking, using best practice for media relations and issues management
  • Solid planning and organizational skills, decision-making and analytical ability
  • Thrives in high-pressure, time-sensitive environments, with ability to work independently
