Manager, Strategic Ventures

You have an entrepreneurial spirit and are known for your ability to think out of the box. You are a strategic thinker who uses research, data and a disciplined approach to inform your ideas, improve upon them, and take them to the next level. Working with the energy of a start-up and the support afforded by an established company will meet your needs for the magic of innovative work and career stability.

Smart, Savvy + Associates has partnered with the British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) on its search for a Manager, Strategic Ventures. As a member of a small entrepreneurial innovation team within BCAA, you will help source and develop new product and service opportunities that will bring additional value to current and future BCAA members. Past successes from this team include the origination, launch, and operation of the award-winning Evo Car Share and the company’s entry into the auto service business.

If your next challenge includes bringing innovative products to market, consider bringing your unique expertise to one of BC’s top employers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess the viability of a new product or service offering for BCAA in terms of market fit, market size and market accessibility
  • Define the competitive set and market landscape for a potential new product or service
  • Build and own the business case - including financial models, business model and prototypes - to pilot a new product or service
  • Test a business opportunity, validate assumptions and the value proposition and refine the business plan based on experiential learning, metrics and other sources of insight gained during the pilot
  • Build strategic relationships with stakeholders and secure the resources required to launch the new business or service
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to innovate on existing lines of businesses, explore new customer segments and similar topics

Required Qualifications and Competencies
  • Bachelor or Master’s degree, preferably with a major in Marketing or Finance
  • 4+ years of work experience in any of the following:
    • Consumer Marketing, ideally in Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) or Financial Services
    • Strategic Advisory in a fast paced, disciplined environment (Consulting, Finance, M&A, VC, Private Equity)
    • Product Management / Go-to-Market Strategy positions
  • Proven experience in leading complex cross-functional projects and developing fact-based recommendations through sound business analysis
  • Self-starter, able to set own goals and timelines to achieve high-level objectives
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills
  • Strong understanding of brand and consumer strategy

The BCAA Strategic Ventures team is based at two sites: 2-3 days per week at the BCTIA Innovation Hub near downtown Vancouver and 2-3 days at BCAA headquarters in Burnaby, BC (right off the #1 Hwy exit at Willingdon, near BCIT).

Job Match

We are a client-facing business so we’re actively seeking people that fit our client’s requests. If you’re a fit for a role, we’ll reach out via email or phone to chat further about the opportunity with you. Online Screening

If we've contacted you with an opportunity that you're interested in pursuing, we'll put you through a screening process called the Online Career Profile. It takes about an hour to complete, but we promise the investment will be worth the return so we can find you a perfect match.

Interview

We then meet face-to-face with you to flush out your OCP further and get to know you on a personal level. If following this both parties see a great fit for the role in mind, we then introduce you to our client to go through their interview and hiring process.
