Manager, Strategic Ventures

Smart, Savvy + Associates has partnered with the British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) on its search for a Manager, Strategic Ventures. As a member of a small entrepreneurial innovation team within BCAA, the Manager, Strategic Ventures, provides strategic and analytical expertise for the identification, assessment, development, launch, and commercialization of potential new strategic venture initiatives for the organization. This is a multi-disciplinary position that is strategic, tactical and operational, and will support the team in building on the success of BCAA’s Evo Car Share and Auto Service Centres. Position Overview

Key Responsibilities
 
  • Identify and develop new business concepts based on your own insights and the contributions of internal and external subject matter experts and advisors.
  • Assess the viability of a new product or service offering for BCAA in terms of market fit, market size and market accessibility.
  • Define the competitive set and market landscape for a potential new product or service for BCAA.
  • Build and own the business case - including financial models, business model and prototypes - to pilot a new product or service for BCAA.
  • Test a business opportunity, validate assumptions and the value proposition and refine the business plan based on experiential learning, metrics and other sources of insight gained during the pilot.
  • Build strategic relationships with stakeholders and secure the resources required to launch the new business or service.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to innovate on existing lines of businesses, explore new customer segments and similar topics
 
Qualifications and Competencies
 
Education
 
  • Bachelor degree or Master’s degree, preferably with a major in Marketing
 
Experience
 
  • 5+ years of relevant working experience in a B2C environment, ideally in the Consumer Packaged Goods or Financial Services industry
  • Prior experience in bringing a new product or service to market (from research to business case to go-to-market strategy), including leadership, strategy and product management
  • Track record in leading complex cross-functional projects
  • Market research background is a strong asset
 
Skills and Competencies
 
  • Proven quantitative analysis, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Comfort with ambiguity – able to set own goals and timelines to achieve high-level objectives
  • Consumer marketing acumen – ability to analyze, recognize, understand and interpret consumer behavior, brand strategies, customer needs, and be able to turn this knowledge into action.
  • Demonstrated sound interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills
  • Strong understanding of brand and consumer strategy
  • Highly motivated self-starter who works well in an informal team environment      
 
The BCAA Strategic Ventures team is based at two sites: 2-3 days per week at the BCTIA Innovation Hub near downtown Vancouver and 2-3 days at BCAA headquarters in Burnaby, BC (right off the #1 Hwy exit at Willingdon, near BCIT).
